Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water (105°F-115°F)
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup melted shortening
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 4 2/3 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons honey (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for glaze)
  • Warm water (as needed for glaze)
  • Vegetable or peanut oil (for frying, if applicable)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In another bowl, combine warm water, honey, egg, and vanilla extract.
  2. Mix the melted shortening into the wet ingredients until well blended.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients using a stand mixer on low speed; knead on medium speed for about 8 minutes until the dough is sticky yet workable.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in an oiled bowl. Cover and let rise for 1 to 2 hours until nearly doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to form a rectangle. Dust with cinnamon-sugar filling before rolling it up tightly.
  6. Cut into pieces and let rise again for about 45 minutes on a parchment-lined baking sheet before baking or frying.
